Too much to do? Don’t know where to start? Bust overwhelm in 2 minutes.
In my work as business coach and business consultant, the issue of overwhelm arises again and again. There are many steps we can take to turn overwhelm into action, I have included here a 2 minute trick that will get most people out of overwhelm and into action.
Overwhelm is essentially created by one of two things:
1. Looking at the thing you need to accomplish (eg a task or project) and thinking its so BIG, that you just don’t know where to start.
2. Looking at the thing you need to accomplish (eg a task or project) and thinking there are just so MANY pieces, that you just don’t know where to start.
Both of these are a problem with chunking, which is explained fully in this post on the ‘hierarchy of ideas’.
If you are feeling overwhelmed with what you need to do, I recommend the following 3 step process:
I. Heart breathing.
Put your hand on your heart, close your eyes and take 5 deep breaths in and out.
Each time you breath OUT, let any stress or concern leave your body.
Each time you breath IN, feel yourself filling up with resourcefulness.
II. Get clear on your OUTCOME for this ‘THING’. Be specific about what you wish to accomplish, by when and what your measurement is.
III. Ask yourself one of the following empowering questions:
A) If the task is too BIG ask >>> ‘What is a bite sized piece that I can start with?’
B) If there are too many pieces ask >>’What one thing, if I did it now would have the biggest positive impact towards achieving my outcome?’
Repeat these questions as appropriate until the overwhelm is replaced with forward momentum.
An example of how one might use this:
Imagine you had a website to build in 1 weekend, and no technical skills.
> Do the heart breathing and get calm and present
> Get clear of the deadline and what the finished product should look like
> Find a bitesized piece to start with… like writing a blog post on overwhelm.
How do you feel after you try this 2 minute cure for overwhelm?
